Manchester United 6 - Fenerbahce 2

What can I say? It kicked ass. Wayne Rooney proved his worth to United fans with an amazing performance that produced 3 goals for his Reds debut. What can we really say about this kid? 18 years old, comes off a broken foot, and tears up his first match - Champions League no less. With so much time to develop, and learn more about his teammates - Rooney has a very, very bright future ahead of him. Ruud and Roon could possibly be the best striker combination in the world right now.

I absolutely lust to see what the future holds for Manchester United now.

Strange Recollections

Does anyone ever have those moments where you can sit back, reflect, and find that you remember something so totally random that it's almost difficult placing yourself within that memory - as though it is some movie constructed by the brain to fill an unknown Freudian need.

This happened to me the other day.

It must have been 10 years ago, or more, that I had gone to my first school dance (I think). At the Brian King Centre in Warman, Saskatchewan - to be precise. I must have been influenced by some sort of vile media propaganda at the time - perhaps one of those Flashdance style movies. I was absolutely positive that it was really cool to do crazy footwork on the dance floor - and a certain plateau was reached only when those individuals around me would draw back in awe at the skill of my pivots.

So, late in the evening, after a hearty dose of orange pop, with dreams of stardom in mind, I made my way onto the dance floor. At first, I started to groove to the music, then slowly upped the tempo. No one gets famous for moving slowly I decided. Within moments I was jamming like a true professional, feet flying everywhere, hands planted firmly in my pockets, eyes focused straight ahead. Yes, I moved like I had never moved before, with no regard whatsoever for the tempo of the music blasting out of the tower speakers on either side of the stage, and it seemed to me at the time, that the surrounding people did make room for a superstar in the making, to admire a young man who was allowing them a glimpse at what would become a open floodgate of incredible talent.

Upon reflection, I realize they may have actually been moving away from the crazy kid that seemed to be having a seizure on the dance floor.

Either way, I'm not sure how, if at all, this applies to my life now. Perhaps my absolute refusal to use the dance floor at clubs stems from this one incident, years past. Who knows. I thought I should share it though, doubtless someone will find it amusing.

The CSI series has been expanded!

It's not enough that they have shows based in both Las Vegas and Miami, but New York simply had to be included! What's next? LA? Chicago? Detroit? Lynchburg, Virginia?

While I'm sure it sounds like a good idea, taking advantage of the incredible popularity of the CSI franchise, I personally think they're just continually diluting the show. I mean, honestly, how many ways can they kill someone and analyze it - in three American cities (read: there's not much of a difference other than scenery), and still keep it interesting over the long run? It's not like I watch the show because I really care about the character progression.

If anyone were to ask me what they should do, I would say to move the franchise to somewhere truly different. How about: CSI - Calcutta, CSI - Rio de Janeiro, or CSI - Istanbul. Now THAT would be a real change of pace. They could have equipment problems, and underfunding, maybe some religious conflicts with autopsies, deal with all kinds of underworld gangs and crazy slums. Not thatgangs and slums don't exist in the US, but we've all seen that before. Lets see it in another country!

Any takers?

91.5 The Beat was playing on the radio at work the other day. One of the loser dj's was talking with the monkey news guy about some CD that one of the nameless generic male hip hoppers is coming out with. Then, to my utter amazement, they started talking about how 'hot' the songs are going to be. Not in the way that they'll be big sellers/really popular. But hot - as in sexy. Bear witness:

Loser: One of the songs is called Red Light District.
Monkey: Wow, that sounds so hot!
Loser: Yeah! Like, really hot! I can't wait to hear it!
Monkey: Me neither, it'll be hot.

I found myself fighting off simultaneous urges to both bash the radio and heave my innards onto the dirty cement upon which I was standing. Being the controlled individual I am, I managed to fight off both urges, though I fear I failed at choking back at least a little bit of bile.

I can usually put up with the music - songs about "My Pooh", 'questions', leaning back, and other ill conceived bullshit. But with discourse like that clogging the airways in between tracks - believe it or not - I actually want the songs to start playing again.

How sad is that!?!?

Things are going pretty normal over here. Been going hard at the gym, usually right after my shift finishes at work. I haven't missed a day this week, and I've also been experimenting with a different style of workout called "super-sets". Makes for some really good/intense workouts, but also makes for a very sore me the following day.

Todd Bertuzzi is trying to build a fence around his home in Kitchener. But a neighbour complained to city council that he's not allowed to build a tall fence, and that it will lower property values. Bertuzzi just wants some privacy for his family from the gawkers and trespassers. For crying out loud, let the man build a fence!

Bob Goodenow says that the NHLPA isn't looking for sympathy from fans. Of course not, all they want is the money that comes with the fans. If the fans are angry or frustrated; well, it's not his problem.

Finally, Canada is doing well at the Paralympic Games in Athens. 11 Golds and 29 Medals overall after 6 days. Nice to see our Paralympic athletes are doing well. It's a shame there's little to no coverage of the games.

I mean, look at that goodstuff? This was just after I crash-landed on the Rakatan homeworld. Very cool.  Posted by Hello

Well I managed to complete Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It took 38 hours of solid gameplay, but damn was it worth it. I'm actually ready to go again hehe. My character was a Light side Scoundrel/Sentinel, for my next effort I'm planning on doing a fully Dark side Soldier/Consular. (Build up hp with soldier, then go crazy with force powers when Consular - see how that works out.) I'm already excited about the *intended* December release date of KotoR II.

I went out last night, and I didn't really have too much to drink. But somehow, that particular quantity made me feel more tipsy than it has any right to. To be honest, I feel rather victimized right about now.

Anyhow, the week at work sucked, and I'm infinitely pleased that it's over.

The NHL lockout was confirmed a few days back. Completely expected, but nevertheless disappointing. Maybe in, oh, a year or so, the owners and players will finally hash out an agreement that doesn't drag the league through financial ruin. I'm just about positive we'll be seeing a smaller league when it finally starts up again. The fanbase in the Southern US isn't dedicated enough to come back to the league after a lengthy lockout. Besides - States that barely know what snow and ice are don't deserve hockey. I guess we'll see what happens though. I'd like to think that at least half of this season could be salvaged. But if it did happen - I would honestly be really surprised.

A shame - 'cause the Canucks were going to take the cup this year.

The True North - Strong and Victorious!

Cheers for Team Canada(!!!) who today eliminated Finland in a knuckle-biter of a contest. The final result, 3-2.

About midway through the game, one of my sources in Helsinki managed to contact me and relay the information that the Finnish are, indeed, babyeaters.

While reports like this usually should be taken with a grain of salt - we could consider this at least partially true as there was no one from Finland on hand to deny the claim.

In the end though, all that matters is that Canada has once again proven itself to be The Greatest Hockey Nation In The World! WOOOOHOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Fix Canada's Health Care!

While visiting any of Canada's hospitals have you been the victim of Long waits? Poor service? Understaffing? Hallway medicine?

Take heart, You aren't alone! You are a part of the majority!

Yes, it's true, Medicare - that service that "speaks eloquently to our value as a nation" is in trouble once again. Why? Because there isn't enough money. The Premiers of our provinces, headed by Chair of the Premiers' Federation Dalton-'I won't raise your taxes'-McGuinty are demanding Martin and his government pony up more cash to save our beleaguered system.

They say Martin has only promised an amount equal to 12.2 billion dollars over 6 years. That's just over 2 billion a year, for a system that cost 84.8 billion dollars last year alone. An expenditure that already equates to $5385 for every single employed Canadian. Does anyone still wonder where all their tax dollars go? But you have to think that a little more would help, no? I mean, that's roughly an extra $64 dollars for every Canadian citizen ($114 for each Canadian with a job) per year. Not to mention the extra money the provinces will be spending - I only have to look at recent payslips to see my contribution to Ontario's new health care tax.

It's not enough though - it never is. People aren't happy - they are complaining. The solution is, of course, to throw so much money at it that it evaporates. Well, hopefully. Something to the tune of $30 billion? Sure, that sounds good, the premiers say.

There is no real desire to revamp Medicare, or to change it an anything even close to a 'fundamental' way. Canadians hold it too close to their heart - our politicians tell us to, because it's the only thing that keeps us different from the big bad Americans - they have to PAY for service!??! Pah!!! We love our way, except for when we try to take advantage of it - and then the bitching begins. It's all a part of the Canadian identity - as far as the average Canadian is concerned, we all deserve a free-ride! That is, the government should supply us with every service imaginable, because no one wants to take any responsibility for themselves. Think free daycares! Those worked in Quebec, kind of, well, it was a nice thought.

It isn't free though, it all costs money. So, instead of relying on private enterprise - designed to be more efficient because companies are trying to make money (Private enterprise is bad! That's capitalism right? Yes - The root of all evil! Taking advantage of poor workers like you and I, bastards), citizens demand the government get involved - because even though no one really trusts politicians, or civil servants, etc - the collective consciousness still demands more service.

Some people talked about trying to find a way to make both private and public health care available in Canada.

What!?!? The big bad privates involved in our health care? That's American-style isn't it? That's baaad.

Instead, any Canadians (and there are more than a few) who have any condition that requires attention sooner than our system can give it (or just the folks with money to spend) go down south for service. They take their money, and invest it elsewhere. But the joke is on them, they're putting pressure on the American health care system. Hah!

Even without thinking about alternative services for Canadians, there's still plenty that could be done with Medicare. Weed out the waste!

Problem: Most waste is caused by citizens. Those idiots who think they need a doctor's care every time they bruise their arm, or bleed a little bit when a knife bumps into their finger, or come rushing for prescription drugs whenever they or their children have an inkling of a cough. If only people had the capacity to use their brains, it would all cost so much less.

Wait, there's more! What about the waste in the hospitals? Why use 10 milligrams or this drug or other, and throw away the other 30 because you opened the bottle, and once it's opened it can't be closed, so the rest is garbage. Not an eloquent example, but it happens - every day. Find ways to stop wasting expensive medical materials, maybe? This is all public run, right? Everyone knows the track record for efficiency those people have. (Civil Service, anyone? No wonder I can't get a job, there's half a million people working for the government that do Absolutely Nothing.)

It's going to get worse before it gets better though, the baby boomers are retiring. We all know what that means - they'll be sucking up hospital services like a newborn on a teat. I know this is true, because Dalton McGuinty said it. Damn, those baby boomers. First they ruined the CPP, and now Medicare. We all know that that particular population spike is to blame for all of our problems. Even the problems in fundamentally flawed systems.

This is what we're inheriting, fellow readers. (I'm pretty sure my readership demographic excludes geriatrics.) Fools that play around with a lot of our money, without really fixing anything.

Consider the demons exorcized! Damn that game had it all - portions of tight checking, portions of freeflowing offense, some great goaltending, hard hitting, heart stopping moment and tonnes of entertainment. I was honestly on the edge of my seat the entire game. The Czech's put up one hell of a fight - they played really great hockey. But in the end, Canadian grit and determination won the day - props to all the players who had stand out games - and extra props to Vincent Lecavalier for notching the game winning goal in overtime. 4-3 baby! Way to go Canada! As for Tuesday - Bring on Finland!!

I'm set up for afternoon shift next week - looks like I'll be taking tuesday evening off! Whether my boss grants it or no; I may be forced to come down with a sudden sickness. Woowoo can't wait!

Big game in 3 hours! It looks like Brodeur's injury is going to keep him out of the semi-final. That sucks pretty hard, cause he's obviously one of the best goalies in the world. Roberto Luongo though, is also world class, and if Brodeur does pull out, no doubt Team Canada is still safe with a backstopper like him.

The Fins beat the United States in action last night. I must echo the sentiments of fellow blogger Matt in this respect. It's a shame, because in the event that Canada beats the Czech's tonight (Sure as hell hope so!) a Canada-Finland matchup just doesn't have the same tension and competitiveness as a Canada-USA matchup. Canada's primary hockey rivalries are more along the lines of USA, Russia, and Czech Republic. I still remember the day the Canuck-turned-Yankee traitor Brett Hull dashed Canada's first place hopes in the final game of the last World Cup of Hockey. It would have been sweet, sweet revenge to meet again in the final this year and pull out a victory - just like at Salt Lake City. Of course, that doesn't mean a Canada - Finland final wouldn't be a great game to watch - it sure as hell would!

Tonights game though, should have enough rivalry to please everyone. I don't think a single hockey fan in Canada has forgotten the disastrous shootout loss in the semi's against the Czech's in Nagano. Tonight is the perfect opportunity to exorcise those 6 year old demons. So, with that in mind - GO CANADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Team Canada routed Slovakia 5-0 today, earning themselves a date this Saturday with the Czech Republic. Damn, that game will be tough! The Czech's are playing pretty damn well right now, so it'll be a real test of Canada's mettle to push past those folks to get into the finals. That said, I have all kinds of confidence in our boys, especially with the way they played tonight, and the fact that they too, continue to get better. I can guarantee I'll be glued to the T.V. all night. Go Canada!!!!

Everyone, go take the Penny Arcade quiz now! This brought back a lot of really good memories. My ranking was Tycho.

Canada beat Russia 3-1 today, and damn that was a good game to watch. Finished the round robin with a record of 3-0, with 10 goals for and 3 against. The young kids are all stepping up and getting results, which is really nice to see, and the vets are rock solid. Martin Brodeur has done a great job in net - it's comforting seeing him back there because you just KNOW he's going to give you a chance to win every game. Way to go! It must also be comforting for him, seeing the incredible array of talent lined up in front of him - though the opposing teams certainly don't lack for world class players. I'm getting pretty damn excited about our chances here, but make no mistake - it's still anybodies tournament. The star power each one of the teams has (except Germany tbh - no offense, but not a lot of big names on that team) is more than enough to earn each one ample opportunity to take home the crown. Cheers to the boys nevertheless! May their streak continue unabated! Woo!

Went out drinking this eve. Started out the night with 4 shots and a double of rum. The night was good. It was very good. I managed to go undefeated in pool as well. Went to Flying Dog first - very cool place. Finished off the night at Revolution - also pretty cool. Overall it was a good night. Just sucks that I have to get up in 3 hours for work tomorrow :s.

lol. I'm now in the friendship doghouse, so to speak. Who said sharing your amusement with the world isn't good conduct? Happily, I need not fear a physical attack. She's too far away! Bwa hahahaha!

Perhaps I shouldn't make mention of the follow-up conversation I had with Kathryn, where she accused me of making her look like a silly girl for her failing the other day. Of course she can spell "definately", she said.

I was, understandably, very amused. I advised her to take advantage of Microsoft Word's spellcheck feature, to reference her spelling of "definately".

Instead, I'll talk a little bit about team Canada! Way to go boys, for a handy victory over the stubborn Americans, and for a good thwapping against Slovakia. It's a shame to see Jovanovski get forced out of the tournament due to injuries though. He's a hell of a defenseman, would have been nice to see him follow up the Olympic Gold with another (hopefully!) first place performance. Wade Redden also managed to get injured last night, so Canada's blueliners are slowly getting dwindled out. I don't know the status of Redden's injuries, but so far he's the fourth Canadian defender to bite the dust due to injury. (MacInnis and Pronger being the first two, back during the team selection stage.) Luckily, Canada has plenty of depth. I have a lot of faith in Hannan and Bouwmeester. They'll do just fine.

Next game against Russia. Should be a good one!
